Why Does My Circuit Breaker Keep Tripping?

A circuit breaker can trip because the electrical circuit is experiencing a condition the breaker is designed to protect against. Possible causes include an overloaded circuit, short circuit, ground fault, equipment problem, wiring problem, or another electrical fault. A breaker that repeatedly trips should not simply be reset over and over.

What Does a Circuit Breaker Do?

Your electrical panel distributes electricity throughout the home. Individual breakers protect circuits by interrupting power when certain unsafe electrical conditions occur. Think of the breaker as a safety device, not an inconvenience.

Too Much Load on the Circuit

Several high-demand appliances operating on the same circuit may require more current than that circuit is designed to carry. You may notice the breaker trips when multiple devices run simultaneously.

DIY Pros Warning

Never replace a breaker with a larger-amperage breaker simply because the existing breaker keeps tripping. Circuit protection must match the wiring and electrical design.

A Problem With an Appliance

If a breaker consistently trips when one particular appliance or tool operates, stop using that equipment until the problem is understood.

Short Circuits and Ground Faults

Electrical faults can occur within wiring, fixtures, receptacles, switches, cords, or equipment. Repeated faults generally call for qualified electrical troubleshooting.

Can I Reset a Tripped Breaker?

If there are no obvious signs of electrical damage or danger, follow the panel or breaker manufacturer's reset procedure. If it trips again, stop repeatedly resetting it and investigate the cause.

When to Call an Electrician

Get professional help for repeated trips, a breaker that will not reset, signs of overheating, burning odors, buzzing, crackling, damaged wiring, or other indications of an electrical problem.

The Bottom Line

A circuit breaker is part of your home's safety system. If it keeps tripping, do not fight the breaker; find the problem. Learn more through DIY Pros Homeowner School and get the FREE DIY Pros Home Maintenance Checklist.
